I'm trying to figure out how to take action shots of The May Queen swimming. This is obviously not what I was going for, but I kind of like how she looks frozen, and everything else appears to be in motion. I think I moved the camera, following her leap, so she is less blurry than everything else.

My Nikon has a setting for taking motion that works quite well. If your big camera doesn't have one, try shooting at a higher ASA and prefocus on, say, the end of the diving board, then hold the button half way and move the camera to the centre of the child. Should work with the point and shoot as well.
I learned this long ago taking gymnastics meet shots with film.
Results will be grainy but stop action.
